Programme of Service 2003 - 2007
- Our Blueprint for Awareness, Advocacy and Action

A Club’s Programme reflects the SI Programme Focus, which is adopted every four years by delegates to the International Convention Board. Activities related to the focus topics in the six Programme areas are chosen by Regional Voting Delegates to the SI Board.

Since 1995, Soroptimist Programme has been underpinned by the Beijing Platform for Action, the document adopted by the 189 Member Countries at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing.


The Programme areas are:

  • Human Rights and the Status of Women
  • Health
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Economic and Social Development
  • International Goodwill and Understanding

Human Rights/Status of Women

Women will be empowered by being afforded human rights and freedom from all forms of violence:

  • Eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls
  • Eliminate trafficking of human beings, especially women and girls
  • Reduce the harmful effects of conflict and war on women and girls


Education

Women and girls will enjoy enhanced status and will be enabled to achieve their full potential throughout their lifespan: • Work for universal primary education and access to lifelong learning for women and girls • Work for universal access to quality education and training opportunities for women and girls in technology and non-traditional occupations • Facilitate the understanding of the role and contribution of men and boys to achieve gender equity



Economic and Social Development

 
Women will live and work in safe and equitable environments with equal opportunities for advancement:
  • Develop programmes and partnerships to eradicate the extreme poverty and hunger of women and girl
  • Empower young women to meet today’s challenges
  • Improve societal and workplace conditions to enable women to achieve their potential
  • Increase women’s involvement in management and decision-making



Health

Women will have optimal mental and physical health through out their life span :

• Actively promote awareness of women’s needs and their role in combating HIV/AIDS
• Improve nutrition and access to health care and medical supplies/medicines for women and children
• Decrease maternal and infant mortality rates
• Support ending tobacco usage-Lobby for the ratification and implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
• Eliminate drug and substances abuse



Environment

Women will be equal partners in the process of managing natural resources, maintaining biodiversity and achieving sustainable communities:

• Improve and increase access to safe drinking water as a basic human right
• Increase fair distribution of food resources to those in need



International Goodwill and Understanding

Women will be:

• Equal partners in the attainment of world peace, tolerance and understanding
• Enhance respect for all cultures and halt al forms of discrimination through increased tolerance and mutual understanding
• Advocate for women’s participation in the peace process, to include reconciliation, reconstruction and the humane resettlement of refugees. Support implementation of UN Security Council 1325, 2000
• Advocate for the banning of landmines, the clearance of residual ordnance and rehabilitation of land
• Promote the implementation of The Ottawa Treaty

Safe Mall
